INSURANCE PREMIUM HIKE VERSUS THE RIGHT TO DAMAGES

"A further increase in insurance premium tax (IPT) announced in the Budget on the 16th March 2016 “smacks of hypocrisy.”

Chancellor George Osborne announced an increase of 0.5% on the rate of IPT, bringing it up to 10%.  The rate had already increased significantly from 6% to 9.5% in November.

The fact that this has been passed on to consumers through their insurance premium is no secret.  Yet in November’s Autumn Statement, the Chancellor was so determined to reduce car insurance premiums that he announced that the right to claim damages for some whiplash injuries would be removed.

The fact that on the one hand the Chancellor is prepared to sacrifice the right to claim damages for injuries in the hope that premiums will fall and, on the other, actively takes action which will increase premiums is simply contrary to the interests of innocent victims of personal injury.
