Up to 19 professors at Wolverhampton University are to be made redundant due to underperformance in their academic areas.  Those areas being targeted are computing, engineering, environment and law.

No doubt the news will send shockwaves through the universty, affecting staff and students alike.

Union leaders have described the redundancy news as 'a brutal attack on academic staff'.

The redundancies will be confirmed at the end of July and there are other professors at risk, meaning that staff are feeling 'deeply concerned' about their own future.

The vice-chancellor at Wolverhampton University, Professor Geoff Layer, has been quoted as saying "...we are refocusing and reducing staff numbers in some areas of activity whilst growing in other areas and the overall outcome will be that we have more academic staff to teach, research and innovate.  We recognise the difficulty this will cause to some colleagues but we are clear that we need to diversify and refocus some of our investment in order to realise our ambitious strategy ‘Our Vision Your Opportunity’ which will generate some £250m investment in the University."
