Following the tragic death of two boys, Ikea and safety regulators have advised people to keep the Malm three and four drawer chests away from children (see picture), unless they are safely mounted to a wall.  Ikea is offering a free kit for consumers to enable them to fix the drawers to the wall.

The products have not been recalled officially but offering to repair or replace the product is technically a recall.  The US Consumer Product Safety Group (CPSC) and Ikea have received 14 reports of Malm drawers tipping over, resulting in four people being injured.  Ikea is also alleged to be aware of three other deaths occurring as a result of other models of chests and drawers tipping over.  These deaths date back to 1989.

Even if you do not have a Malm chest of drawers, please be aware that any freestanding chest of drawers or dresser can be dangerous with children and can fall on top of them causing catastrophic injuries.  Always ensure that your chest of drawers is firmly mounted to a wall to ensure it cannot topple over.
